Content Portfolio Project

Students in this course have the opportunity to reflect on their preparedness to teach English language Arts skills:

  • Speaking/listening 
  • Visual literacy/visually representing 
  • Writing/composition/grammar 
  • Literature/reading 

For this portfolio project, students will:

  1. Collect materials and/or provide descriptions of coursework and experiences that represent their understanding of teaching and learning in the English language arts areas listed above; and,
  2. Reflect on their collection of materials, discussing their preparedness to teach each of these skills in secondary English classrooms.

This portfolio may take whatever shape you like. Each of the four categories above should be represented by at least three artifacts. Think broadly and creatively. What's the best way for you to collect, process, and communicate this information?

We'll use some class time to discuss short proposals you make for the completion of this project. We'll also use some class time for you to work on these projects.

Learning Letter

Each student is required to complete a course reflection in the form of a learning letter blog posting. This final blog posting should fulfill three major requirements: 1. Reflect on the work you’ve completed in the course (text presentations, content portfolio, etc.) 2. Reflect on the theories and concepts we explored in readings and discussions 3. Graphic Novel/Visual Literacy Text Presentation

Students in this course will have 10 minutes to present a graphic novel text of their choice or a text that focuses on the teaching and learning of visual literacy. Research shows a variety of methods of visual literacy instruction are worthwhile, and this is our opportunity to explore the options of how we can do instruction in these areas well. Each student is required to choose a text and to prepare a short talk to introduce the text to the class. As a teacher of adolescents, you will want to familiarize yourself with as much graphic novel literature research/theory that speaks to the teaching and learning of visual literacy.
